Kaiserlicher Stall

The Kaiserlicher Stall stands in Mosern, a village on the shore of Grundlsee in the Ausseerland region of Styria. It is a small timber building from the 16th century, once part of the imperial fishmaster’s estate. The name recalls the time when the estate belonged to the emperor’s forest administration.
The building is worth a visit because it shows how the fishmaster’s duties shaped life around the lake. A 1787 record allowed the fishmaster to keep two cows, and foresters from both sides of the lake could stable one cow each in the wooden upper floor. After the estate passed through several owners in the 20th century, the community bought it in 1987 and turned the old stall into an exhibition space.
Visitors today find two exhibition rooms on the ground floor and two more in the wooden upper storeys. The ground floor also serves as a workshop and storage area for the cultural working group that runs the exhibitions. Outside, the building sits beside the lake with views across the water to the surrounding mountains.
