Schloss Gutenbrunn am Weinsberg

Schloss Gutenbrunn stands in the small market town of Gutenbrunn in the Zwettl district of Lower Austria. The building was constructed between 1771 and 1785 by Joseph von Fürnberg. In 1795 Emperor Franz II purchased the castle, and it remained part of the Habsburg-Lothringian estate at Persenbeug until 2012. After careful restoration under heritage guidelines, the property passed into private ownership. The site now sits quietly on the edge of the settlement, its classical lines contrasting with the surrounding farmland. The early-Classical design centres on a three-sided courtyard framed by a two-storey main block and single-storey wings. The five-bay central section rises under a steep mansard roof, its main entrance topped by a tall basket-arched niche and a small balcony. Window frames follow the flat-plate style, while the balcony railings retain Baroque curves. Stone pyramids support lanterns at the gate, and a single-storey service wing extends westward. Every detail shows the influence of late 18th-century taste. Visitors approach across a gravel forecourt and pass beneath the arched gateway. The courtyard offers a clear view of the symmetrical façade and the slate roof rising above it. Inside, the main corridor leads past restored rooms where original cornices and doorcases survive. The flanking wings once housed kitchens and stables, now adapted for modern use. Beyond the service wing, a low wall marks the edge of the estate gardens, giving glimpses of meadows and distant woodland.
