Foreland Point

Foreland Point is a rugged headland on Devon’s north coast near Lynmouth, marking the northern edge of the Devon and Exmoor coastline. The cliffs rise sharply from the sea, with the highest point reaching 89 metres above high tide. A mile inland, near Countisbury, the headland’s summit reaches 302 metres, offering wide views. The land is managed by the National Trust, with some sections open year-round as part of the South West Coast Path. Other areas have restricted access to protect wildlife and fragile habitats. The headland is also home to the Lynmouth Foreland Lighthouse, operated by Trinity House, which guides ships along this stretch of coast. Between Bideford and Foreland Point lies a Marine Conservation Zone, protecting the rich underwater life. Walkers following the coast path can spot seals and seabirds along the way. The contrast between the wild sea and the high cliffs makes the landscape dramatic. Visitors find steep coastal paths winding along the edge of the cliffs, with sheer drops to the crashing waves below. The lighthouse stands as a landmark against the skyline, its beam cutting through the mist on foggy days. From the higher points, the Bristol Channel stretches out, dotted with distant sails. The air carries the scent of salt and heather from the moors nearby. On clear days, Exmoor’s hills rise in the background, adding depth to the view.
