Wasagasse 33

Danzers Orpheum stands in the Alsergrund district of Vienna at Wasagasse 33. Built in the 19th century, it began as the Harmonietheater before becoming a lively variety and revue house. The building once linked Liechtensteinstraße and Wasagasse, designed partly by Otto Wagner as part of an elegant ensemble. The theatre gained fame under Eduard Danzer, who renamed it Danzers Orpheum and filled it with Varieté programmes. Later, Gabor Steiner transformed it into a glittering winter venue for the nearby Venedig in Wien pleasure park. Stars like Fritzi Massary and composers such as Edmund Eysler and Max Steiner worked here, while Karl Lueger attended its opening night. Visitors today find a quiet residential façade where the theatre once stood. Behind the doors are modern flats, but the site still carries echoes of operettas and revues. The street itself preserves the memory of a place that once drew crowds to light-hearted entertainment and artistic innovation.
