Hochstein

The Hochstein is an extinct volcano rising 563 metres above sea level in the High Eifel range. It stands between the villages of Bell to the north-east and Ettringen to the south, with its slopes shared between the towns of Mendig and the municipality of Ettringen. Two small streams, the Kellbach and the Segbach, rise near its flanks and feed into the Krufter Bach. The hill belongs to the Laach Volcanoes natural region, a landscape shaped by volcanic activity over many centuries. A nature reserve covers most of the hill, protecting its unique geology and habitats. The protected area also links to larger reserves across the Rhine-Ahr-Eifel region. Local legend tells of Countess Genoveva of Brabant who, according to medieval tales, took refuge in a cave on the north-west side of the summit. Known as the Genoveva Cave or Hochstein Cave, this feature adds a layer of historical storytelling to the volcanic hill. The name Hochstein itself appears on maps from the early 19th century, though older local names like Kalberg or Kahler Berg were also used. The hill’s volcanic cone remains clearly visible from surrounding viewpoints. Its slopes are covered with mixed woodland and open grassland typical of the Eifel uplands. A minor road runs past the western edge of the hill, linking Bell and Ettringen via the Roderhöfen farmsteads. On the south-western flank, near this road, lies a motocross track used by local clubs. Walkers can follow forest and field paths that circle the summit and lead to the Genoveva Cave. The views from the top stretch across the Eifel hills and down to the Rhine valley on clear days. The reserve’s quiet trails offer a chance to see buzzards and other birds of prey circling above the volcanic slopes.
