Brixham Heritage Museum

Brixham Heritage Museum sits in the old town of Brixham, a fishing port on the south Devon coast. The building itself is a modest stone structure that once housed the town’s library. Inside, the museum tells the story of Brixham from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Exhibits cover the Napoleonic forts at nearby Berry Head, the town’s long fishing tradition and the craft of ropemaking. Local archaeology and geology are also featured, including finds from the Brixham bone caverns. The museum’s displays on the two world wars show how Brixham’s community changed during those years. A section on the Victorian era highlights the town’s growth as a holiday destination. Visitors can see tools used by local fishermen and samples of rope made in the town’s yards. Artefacts from the bone caverns reveal Ice Age wildlife that once roamed the area. The museum occupies a single large room with clear glass cases along the walls. A long central table holds larger objects such as ship models and fishing gear. Visitors move slowly past the displays, reading the labels and handling some of the smaller items. The atmosphere is quiet, with natural light from tall windows falling on the exhibits. Outside, the museum overlooks a small park near the old harbour, where fishing boats still land their catch.
