Church Street
Church Street is a pedestrianised street in the heart of Monmouth, Wales. It runs through the town centre, linking the market and the parish church. Once the main route into Monmouth from the north-east, it was widened in the 1830s when Priory Street was built above the River Monnow. Before that, it was known as Butcher’s Row because of the butchers’ shops lining the street. Local antiquarian Charles Heath wrote in 1804 that the street was so narrow a loaded waggon could barely pass. Sir John Stepney, the town’s MP, paid for improvements in the 18th century, and Heath later renamed it Church Street. The street’s history is full of colourful stories. In the 1830s, a gingerbread maker named Mrs Syner was nearly dragged by a galloping mail coach after her apron caught in the harness. She escaped injury, confronted the coachman, and helped organise a petition for a new bypass road. Local architect George Vaughan Maddox won the competition to design Priory Street, which opened in 1837. The street’s buildings mostly date from the early 19th century, with three-storey stuccoed terraces on both sides. Some facades, like 24 Church Street, were designed by Maddox around 1840. Today, Church Street is a lively mix of independent shops, galleries, and restaurants. The Savoy Theatre, one of Wales’s oldest working theatres, stands on the site of the old Bell Inn. It has survived as a cinema, bingo hall, and even a magic lantern museum before reopening as a cinema in the 1990s. Other buildings house art galleries, bookshops, greengrocers, butchers, and coffee shops. The street retains its traditional charm while offering modern conveniences, making it a central part of Monmouth’s daily life.
