Schaubühne Lindenfels

The Schaubühne Lindenfels is a cultural venue in Leipzig’s western district of Lindenau. It occupies a former ballroom built in 1876 and enlarged in 1900 by architect Emil Franz Hänsel, whose Jugendstil façade still stands along Karl-Heine-Straße. Inside, visitors find a grand hall with ornate columns and a gallery, while upstairs the Grüner Salon shows films. A bar in the foyer serves drinks between events. The house matters because it was Germany’s first theatre run as a non-profit public company, set up in 2005. Leipzig and Saxony both provide structural grants to keep it alive. Over the years it has hosted directors such as Volker Schlöndorff and performances by Nina Hagen, while Wladimir Kaminer’s Russendisko began here. The building itself survived decades as a factory and empty shell before artists revived it in 1994. Today the main hall hosts theatre and concerts, the Grüner Salon screens independent cinema, and the foyer bar offers a place to meet. The Jugendstil details remain intact despite later uses. Outside, the wide Karl-Heine-Straße fronts a complex that once combined ballroom, cinema and beer garden.
