Winzer Krems

Winzer Krems is Austria’s largest wine producer, based in Krems on the Danube in Lower Austria. Around 750 growers belong to the co-operative, which was founded in 1938. The head office is in Krems, where the cellars and pressing facilities stand beside the river.
The estate grows mainly Grüner Veltliner, Blauer Zweigelt and Riesling on 990 hectares. Its best-known sites are Sandgrube, Goldberg and Wachtberg. The Sandgrube 13 winery handles most of the production. Recent awards include 93 points for a Grüner Veltliner from Wachtberg in the Falstaff guide and a gold medal for the 2022 Grüner Veltliner at the Mundus Vini competition. The range also includes sparkling wines and grape juices.
Visitors walk through the Sandgrube 13 winery to see pneumatic presses and stainless-steel fermenters. White wines ferment at controlled temperatures, while reds undergo traditional maceration and some age in small oak casks. A plaque near the Hiata hut remembers Paul and Johanna Robitschek, former owners of the cellars.
