Weiselberg

The Weiselberg is a hill in the North Palatine Uplands of Saarland, standing 569.5 metres above sea level. It lies near the village of Oberkirchen in the municipality of Freisen, within the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. The upper slopes are covered in forest, providing a habitat for rare plant species. The hill was designated a nature reserve in 1950 to protect its unique ecosystem. To the west-northwest rises the Leichweilerbach, a tributary of the Betzelbach, while the Weiseler Born, the source of the Wilmesbach, lies to the south. The northern spur of the Weiselberg is the Mittelberg, which transitions into the Hochrech hill. The Weiselberg is geologically significant as a volcanic plug formed around 280 million years ago during the Permian period. Its summit dome consists of weiselbergite, a deep black and light blue magmatic rock described by Karl Heinrich Rosenbusch in 1887. The hill is named after this rock, which contains agates and feldspar crystals resembling a night sky. Roman miners once collected agates from the surface, and from the 15th century, green rock was extracted using adits. The most striking feature is the Steinerne Schrank, a rock face resembling a large cupboard, while the southern slopes feature the Steinernes Meer, a basaltic blockfield formed by erosion and solifluction during the last ice age. Visitors to the Weiselberg find a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity and natural forces. The Steinerne Schrank and Steinernes Meer offer striking geological formations to explore. The hill’s forests and protected areas provide quiet walking paths through rare habitats. The summit dome’s rock columns stand in a distinctive milling position, evidence of a rapidly cooling lava lake. The Weiselberg Nature Reserve and Special Area of Conservation ensure the protection of its biodiversity and geological features. The surrounding countryside of the Saar-Nahe Uplands adds to the scenic beauty of the region.
