Mürzsteg Alps

The Mürzsteg Alps form a compact limestone range in the Northern Limestone Alps, lying mostly in Styria with a small part in Lower Austria. The Hohe Veitsch at 1,981 metres is the highest summit, while the Schneealpe massif reaches 1,903 metres in the north-west. The Mur-Mürz Furrow separates the range from neighbours like the Hochschwab Mountains to the west and the Rax-Schneeberg Group to the east. Triassic rocks dominate the heart of the range, including Wetterstein Dolomite and Hallstatt Limestone, while the southern edge belongs to the greywacke zone. The Mürz valley and the Seeberg Pass road mark the natural boundaries of this ridge-and-basin landscape. The range is home to several mountain huts that provide rest for walkers. Graf-Meran House stands at 1,836 metres on the Hohe Veitsch highlands, while Schneealpen House sits at 1,788 metres on the Schneealpe. Hinteralm House lies at 1,450 metres north of the same massif, and Kutatsch Hut offers an open shelter at 1,700 metres. Private huts such as Lurgbauer, Michlbauer and Kaarl provide additional refuge, and the Friends of Nature run Tonion Hut at 1,487 metres. Visitors find sweeping limestone ridges, alpine pastures and deep valleys shaped by the Mur-Mürz Furrow. The high plateaus of Hohe Veitsch and Schneealpe offer long views across Styria and Lower Austria. Triassic rock formations and fossil-rich strata appear along many paths, while the greywacke zone in the south adds contrast. Mountain huts provide simple overnight stays and meals, and the Seeberg Pass road gives access to the northern edge of the range.
