Allt-A-Bhainne

Allt-a-Bhainne is a Scotch whisky distillery in Speyside, Moray, just outside Dufftown. Built in 1975, it was designed for modern efficiency, with all equipment in one room and processes controlled by a single operator. The name comes from the nearby Allt a’ Bhainne, the ‘milk burn’ in Scottish Gaelic. It was created by Seagram to supply malt whisky for Chivas Brothers blends. After being mothballed in 2002, it reopened in 2005 under Pernod Ricard, which had acquired Chivas Brothers in 2001. The distillery’s spirit forms the backbone of Chivas Regal blends, though it rarely bottles its own malt. A short-lived single malt appeared in the late 2010s but was withdrawn after a few years. Allt-a-Bhainne remained focused on producing bulk malt for blending rather than retail releases. Its modern layout and streamlined production set it apart from older distilleries. Visitors find a compact, functional site where whisky is made in a single space. The surrounding Speyside landscape provides a quiet contrast to the busy nearby town of Dufftown. The distillery’s modern design reflects its 1970s origins, with little of the traditional charm found elsewhere. A modest visitor area offers basic insight into the production process. The Allt a’ Bhainne stream still flows nearby, giving the place its name.
