Raudenspitze

The Raudenspitze stands at the border between Austria and Italy, rising to 2,507 metres above sea level. It is the fourth-highest peak in the Carnic Alps and belongs to the municipality of Forni Avoltri in the Val Degano. The mountain overlooks its namesake valley with steep slopes of rock and grass. A challenging path leads to the summit, following a wartime mule track built by Austro-Hungarian troops in the First World War. These soldiers occupied the summit throughout the conflict, using it as a strategic lookout point. The route to the top rewards walkers with dramatic views across the surrounding peaks. The old military path winds through alpine meadows and narrow ridges, offering a glimpse of the high-altitude landscape. The contrast between the rugged rock faces and the softer grassy slopes adds to the mountain’s appeal. The summit itself is a narrow crest with a small metal cross marking the highest point. At the base of the Raudenspitze lies the Val Degano, a quiet valley known for its traditional alpine huts and clear mountain streams. The valley’s remoteness helps preserve its unspoilt character, making it a peaceful place to rest after the climb. From lower down, the mountain’s steep western face dominates the skyline, a reminder of the effort needed to reach the top.
