Lutherkirche Stockerau

The former synagogue in Stockerau now serves as the Evangelical Lutheran church. Built in 1903 by local builder Leopold Holdhaus, it stands in the town centre as a round-arched brick building. The congregation first met in 1856 under a Minjan Verein after religious freedom was granted in 1848. In 1905 they dedicated their own synagogue, separating from the Vienna community. The building passed to the Evangelical church in 1938 after the Jewish community was dissolved. Superintendent Johannes Heinzelmann rededicated it on 6 November 1938 following alterations by architect Herbert Jelinek. The side walls still show the original pilasters and paired windows, while the front gained a small tower and simpler entrance. An altar from the late 19th century, bearing a Christ image, was moved from the old Bürgerspitalskirche. Inside, wooden galleries line the sides and a flat coffered ceiling rests on wooden posts. A memorial stone in front records the building’s earlier life. The town’s Evangelical congregation, founded towards the end of the 19th century, had used the Sebastiani-Kapelle before taking over the synagogue.
