Grünberg (Wien)

The Grünberg, also called the Grüner Berg, is a small hill between Hietzing and Meidling in Vienna’s southwest. It sits between the Wiental valley and the city’s outer districts, linked by a busy five-lane road. The Grünbergstraße cuts through the hill, carrying heavy traffic between the Altmannsdorfer Straße and the A 23 motorway. The hill’s slopes once held vineyards and scattered farmhouses before the city grew around them. Josef Freiherr von Hagenmüller zu Grünberg gave the hill its name in the late 18th century. He built several houses there, which became known as the Grünbergsiedlung. The hill is best known for the buildings that still stand on its edges. Along the Grünbergstraße is the Villa XAIPE, a striking house with a modern name. Nearby in the Tivolipark are two historic structures: the Springer-Schlössl to the east and the Schönbrunnerbad to the west. The Springer-Schlössl was once a private villa, while the Schönbrunnerbad served as a public bathhouse. These buildings reflect the area’s transition from rural land to urban parkland. The Meidlinger Prater amusement park once stood where the road now runs. Visitors find a quiet green space above the city’s noise. The hilltop offers views over Hietzing’s villas and Meidling’s apartment blocks. Paths wind through the Tivolipark, where chestnut and lime trees shade the Springer-Schlössl and the old bathhouse. The Villa XAIPE stands apart, its contemporary style contrasting with the park’s older buildings. From the hill, the Wiental valley is visible to the north, while the motorway traffic fades into the distance. The Grünberg remains a small green island in a busy part of Vienna.
