Giant's Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway lies on the north coast of Northern Ireland, five kilometres northeast of Bushmills. It is a stretch of about forty thousand interlocking basalt columns formed by an ancient volcanic eruption. The columns rise from the cliff foot and vanish beneath the waves, creating stepping stones across the sea. Most columns have six sides, though some have four or eight, and the tallest reach twelve metres high. The cliffs contain solidified lava twenty-eight metres thick in places. The site belongs partly to the National Trust and partly to the Crown Estate and private owners. The causeway is one of the United Kingdom’s greatest natural wonders. In a 2005 poll it was ranked fourth by Radio Times readers. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1986 and a national nature reserve the following year. Its hexagonal columns and unusual joints helped shape early ideas about volcanic geology. In 2022 the International Union of Geological Sciences listed it among the world’s hundred key geological heritage sites. The legend of Fionn mac Cumhaill turning basalt into a path to Scotland adds a layer of folklore to the stones. Visitors walk the tops of the columns, which form natural paving across the shore. The stepping stones lead from the cliff base and disappear under the sea, inviting exploration along the Causeway Coast. The columns show horizontal fractures that create ball-and-socket joints, visible where the rock has split. The site’s volcanic plateau once stretched far beyond Ireland, linking to similar columns at Fingal’s Cave in Scotland. The interplay of legend, science and raw geology makes the causeway a place where earth history and myth meet.
