St John the Baptist's Church, Stanwick

St John the Baptist’s Church stands in the quiet North Yorkshire village of Stanwick St John. The building is a redundant Anglican church, now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It occupies the earthworks of Stanwick Camp, a settlement that began in the early Iron Age. The churchyard contains a 9th-century cross shaft, hinting at an even older place of worship. The present church dates from the 13th century, though much of its appearance today comes from a heavy restoration in 1868 by Anthony Salvin. It was transferred to the Trust in 1990 and is both a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Monument. The church’s architecture reflects centuries of change. The exterior is built of stone rubble with roofs of stone slate, artificial stone slate and lead. A four-bay nave has a south aisle and porch, while a three-bay chancel includes a 19th-century vestry. The west tower rises in three stages, with lancet windows and a battlemented parapet. Inside, a four-bay south arcade leads to a chancel arch, and the font has a 17th-century carved canopy. The organ was built in 1866 by John Fincham, and the church holds three bells cast in the 17th century. Monuments to the Smithson family line the walls, alongside painted boards of the Lord’s Prayer and royal arms of George III. Around the church are several Grade II listed structures. Four 18th-century sandstone tombstones stand south of the aisle, and another group lies east of the porch. An Anglo-Saxon cross-shaft, probably from the 9th century, survives south of the chancel. Two late 19th-century wells built for the Duke of Northumberland lie to the north-east, one fed by a spring about 150 metres away. The church’s setting within ancient earthworks and its mix of medieval and later features make it a place where history can still be touched.
