Nant Bryn Isaf

Nant Bryn Isaf is a Bronze Age ring cairn near Ystrad Meurig in Ceredigion. It stands on a gentle slope in open moorland, marked on Ordnance Survey maps simply as ‘Cairn’. Ring cairns were built by the ancient Celts to mark special places for rituals or to honour the dead. Unlike stone circles, these monuments belong to a different age and purpose. Cadw has listed it as a scheduled ancient monument with the number CD187. The site is quiet, with wide views across the surrounding hills. The ring cairn shows how Bronze Age communities organised their sacred landscapes. Its circular shape, about ten metres across, encloses a low stony bank. The builders placed stones carefully to create a clear boundary around the inner space. Archaeologists recognise these sites as important for understanding burial customs and ceremonial life. The name Nant Bryn Isaf means ‘lower stream of the north hill’ in Welsh, describing its position in the valley. Visitors find a simple grassy mound with a low stone ring, set in open countryside. The site has no grand structures or carvings, just the shape left by people three thousand years ago. A path leads close to the ring, allowing a clear view of its form. The wind often blows across the moor, and skylarks rise from the heather. Standing there, the past feels close but undramatic, a quiet witness to ancient lives.
