Almtaler Köpfl

The Almtaler Köpfl is a 2,204-metre peak in the Toten Gebirge range of Upper Austria. It forms the north-eastern shoulder of the Schermberg, linked by a narrow ridge. The striking north face rises steeply above a deep gorge that separates it from the Schermberg’s own north wall. A well-trodden summit with a cross stands above the valleys and lakes below. The Welser Hütte provides the usual starting point for those who reach the top. The climb follows the Schermberg Klettersteig Tassilo, which crosses the summit ridge. In the same north face climbers find several named routes, including the Grünauer Weg. The route demands sure-footedness and a head for heights along the exposed sections. Views stretch across the Totes Gebirge and far into the distance on clear days. The contrast between the dark rock walls and the bright alpine meadows is striking. At the top a metal cross marks the highest point of the Almtaler Köpfl. Paths fan out from the summit, allowing short circuits for those who prefer not to retrace their steps. The surrounding ridges and peaks frame the horizon in every direction. The air is thin and cool, carrying the scent of alpine plants. From the summit the Welser Hütte appears as a small dot in the valley below.
