Pfarrkirche St. Peter

The parish church of St Peter stands in Linz’s Spallerhof district near the Traun’s mouth into the Danube. It belongs to the Diocese of Linz and serves the southern part of the city. The present building replaced an earlier church that dated back to 1111. The church is worth visiting for its modern architecture and art. Franz Steininger designed the low, flat-roofed cube and its tall freestanding bell tower. Alfred Stifter created the stained glass, including abstract windows from 1963 and figurative scenes from 1987. Josef Priemetshofer made the tabernacle and paschal candlestick in 1963. Inside, the altar, font and lectern follow Steininger’s plans. A late Gothic crucifix from about 1520 hangs beside an 18th-century Madonna. Two paintings by Jakob Zanusi, transferred from the old church, depict St Peter and Mary Magdalene. The etched metal Stations of the Cross were made by Georg Lebzelter after Stifter’s designs.
