East Cowes Castle

East Cowes Castle stands on the northern coast of the Isle of Wight, a sturdy 16th-century artillery fort built to guard the Solent. Henry VIII ordered its construction as part of a chain of defences called the Device Forts, meant to stop enemy ships before they could land troops or attack anchored vessels. The castle was one of many blockhouses and bulwarks raised around England and Wales, each armed with cannons and run by a small garrison of gunners and soldiers. The programme cost £376,000, a huge sum raised partly from the sale of monastery lands after the Dissolution. East Cowes Castle was meant to be part of this wider network, though its exact role in the chain is less well recorded than others. The Device Forts were used in several wars, including the English Civil War, the Anglo-Dutch Wars and the Napoleonic Wars, and were upgraded with newer artillery in the 19th century. By 1900, however, bigger guns and ironclad ships made most of these forts too small to be useful. Some were kept on standby through the Second World War, but by the 1950s even these were shut down and left to decay. Coastal erosion has damaged or destroyed some sites, while others have been repaired and opened to visitors as historical attractions. Today East Cowes Castle is a restored ruin that shows the original stone walls and gun platforms facing the water. The fort sits close to the busy harbour where ferries and yachts pass, linking the Isle of Wight to the mainland. Visitors can walk along the ramparts and look out over the Solent, imagining how the gunners once scanned the horizon for approaching ships. The surrounding area is a mix of maritime industry and quiet residential streets, giving a sense of how the castle once fitted into daily life.
