Schloss Eberstein stands on a rocky spur 130 metres above the Murg valley in the northern part of Gernsbach-Obertsrot. Originally a spur castle built by the Counts of Eberstein in the 13th century, it was later enlarged in the 16th and 17th centuries with walls, towers and a chapel. In the early 19th century the Baden grand ducal family converted it into a neo-Gothic country house, adding a restaurant wing and filling the interiors with historic art.

The castle’s history includes sieges, fires and brief occupation by revolutionary troops in 1849. After decades as a private residence it was restored in the 2000s and now houses a Michelin-starred restaurant, a four-star hotel and a small working winery. The surrounding terraces and vineyards are tended once more, and a tree trail winds around the hill.

Visitors walk up the Murgleiter trail or drive the winding road to reach the castle. The restaurant terrace offers views across the narrowing valley, while the hotel rooms look out over the newly planted vineyard. A beer garden and a small wine shop complete the scene, and the Arboretum’s labelled trees line the paths around the hill.
