Kirche in Gletschach

The Filialkirche Gletschach stands at the western edge of the village of Gletschach in Griffen, Carinthia. First recorded in 1238, this small church is dedicated to Saint Thomas and protected as a listed monument. Its modest size and historic fabric make it a quiet witness to centuries of devotion. Inside, the building mixes styles: a Romanesque nave and a Gothic choir with three-sided closure and stepped buttresses rising to the eaves. A slender spire tops the west tower, while a stone porch on the west wall shelters visitors beneath overlapping slabs. On the south wall, a faded fifteenth-century fresco of Saint Christopher keeps watch. The nave’s ribbed vault gives way to a plain flat ceiling, lit by two tiny Romanesque windows. A round-arched triumphal arch separates the choir from the nave. The high altar, built about 1725, holds a wooden figure of Saint Thomas. To the right, a side altar from around 1750 shows Saint Anthony, while the pulpit dates from the early 1700s. In the porch stands a carved altarpiece made in the first quarter of the 17th century. The church’s layered craftsmanship—Romanesque walls, Gothic ribs, Baroque altars—creates a modest but memorable space.
