Pfarrkirche hl. Stephanus, Kirchdorf in Tirol

The parish church of St Stephen stands in Kirchdorf in Tirol, a village in the Kitzbühel district of the Tyrol. Built for the local Catholic community, it belongs to the deanery of St Johann in Tirol and the archdiocese of Salzburg. The building is protected as an historic monument. The church has passed through several centuries of change. First mentioned in 1197, it was rebuilt in the late Gothic style early in the 16th century and turned into a Baroque interior in the mid-18th century. After a fire in 1809 it was rebuilt in 1815, then renovated in 1912 and 1954. The interior decoration includes ceiling paintings by Joseph Schöpf from 1816 showing scenes from the life of St Stephen. Visitors enter through a pointed west door into a three-bay nave with rounded windows. The one-bay choir ends in five sides and holds a late Gothic sacristy door with an iron grille. The high altar of 1836 shows figures of St Virgil and St Rupert by Josef Haid, while the side altars carry pictures by Johann Endfelder. The church tower contains four steel bells cast in 1920 that ring in the notes F sharp, A, C sharp and G.
