Burg Miesbach

Burg Miesbach stood where the district council building now stands in the town of Miesbach. The site once held a medieval castle built between the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1312 the Waldeckers destroyed the castle, marking the first move to free the area from the Bishopric of Freising. The oldest chapel in Miesbach probably stood inside the castle walls and was ruined with it in 1312. Today no visible traces of the fort remain above ground. The castle’s destruction began a shift in local power that ended the Bishopric’s control. Prälat Heimbucher records that the chapel inside the walls was lost at the same time. Archaeologists still recognise the buried remains as a protected monument under the number D-1-8237-0106. The site is now part of the modern town centre. Visitors see the district council building on the former castle grounds. The only reminder is the official monument listing. The surrounding streets and shops occupy land once defended by high walls. The vanished fortress lives on only in written records and the protected archaeological zone.
