Burg Breitenbühl
The ruins of Breitenbühl Castle stand on a narrow ridge above the Wolf valley near Bernstadt. The site rises about twenty-five metres above the stream and sits at five hundred and forty-five metres above sea level. It was built by the local lords of Bernstadt, probably in the 13th century. Only faint traces remain: low ramparts and the ditch that once defended the neck of the spur. Scholars like Günter Schmitt have studied the remains and dated them to the medieval period. The castle’s position gave it clear views over the surrounding countryside. Its builders chose the spur for its natural strength, so little stonework was ever needed. Visitors today walk a quiet farm track to the ridge. The only signs of the castle are grassy banks and a shallow trench. From the spot there are wide views across the Alb plateau. The silence and the open landscape recall the castle’s vanished past.
