Kath. Pfarrkirche hl. Margaretha, Noreia
The Catholic parish church of St Margaret stands in the village of Noreia in the Mühlen municipality of Murau district, Styria. The church and its walled cemetery are protected monuments. The church is dedicated to Margaret of Antioch and belongs to the Murau deanery in the Graz-Seckau diocese. The building was first recorded in 1324. After fires it was rebuilt in the late-Gothic style without buttresses. The village itself was renamed Noreia in 1928, after the ancient Norican town, following disputed finds. Two Roman inscribed stones from the 1st century are built into the west tower, which has an open ground floor and an octagonal spire. Inside, the two-bay nave leads to a single-bay choir with a three-sided apse. The west gallery carries painted figures of Cecilia and David. The high altar dates from the second quarter of the 18th century and has side portals. Side altars around 1720 show leaf-and-scroll ornament. The left altar, known as the Mariazell altar, holds statues of John the Baptist and Anna selbdritt from the 17th century. The round font, probably late-Gothic, has a neo-classical crown. The cemetery walls enclose simple gravestones and the iron-cast memorial from 1842.
