Vauxhall Gardens

Vauxhall Gardens lies on the south bank of the Thames in Kennington, part of the London Borough of Lambeth. The site began as New Spring Gardens before the Restoration and was first recorded in 1662 when Samuel Pepys visited. By the 18th century it had become one of London’s most famous pleasure gardens, drawing crowds with music, fireworks and tightrope walkers. The rococo Turkish Tent and chinoiserie buildings added colour, while a statue of Handel was later moved to Westminster Abbey. In 1817 a re-enactment of the Battle of Waterloo drew a thousand soldiers and spectators. After financial troubles it closed in 1859, but part of the original grounds now forms a public park. Historians recognise its cultural importance. John Barrell called it a cradle of modern painting, architecture and music under Jonathan Tyers, who turned it into a vast business. Tyers pioneered mass catering and outdoor lighting, selling silver tickets for evening concerts. The gardens became so famous that the word ‘vauxhall’ spread across Europe, giving rise to terms like the Polish foksal and Russian vokzal. For two centuries it entertained Londoners and visitors alike, its walks and entertainments noted in diaries and prints. The rococo interiors of supper boxes were painted by artists from Hogarth’s circle, including Francis Hayman. Today the park preserves traces of its past. Paths wind through the same acres once planted with stately trees and formal allées. A tile motif at Vauxhall tube station still shows the gardens, linking the modern park to its history. Visitors find open lawns and shaded walks where crowds once gathered for concerts and assignations. The Rotunda’s site remains a focal point, while remnants of Tyers’ planting echo the 18th-century design. The park offers a quiet place to recall the music, lights and laughter that once filled the gardens for two hundred years.
