Pfarrkirche Kirchberg an der Pielach
The Pfarrkirche Kirchberg an der Pielach stands on a hill above the market town of Kirchberg in the Pielachtal valley, Niederösterreich. It is one of Austria’s few surviving 15th-century three-aisled pillar basilicas dedicated to Saint Martin. The site has been sacred since the 10th century, when a wooden chapel served the scattered forest farmers. Building began in the early 13th century, with the presbytery the oldest part. Two years of extensions gave the church its present shape, blending early Gothic and late Gothic elements. The church is worth the journey for its rare vaulting and fine furnishings. The choir still shows early Gothic ribbed vaulting with a five-sided apse and a six-part vault, unusual in this region. The three-bay nave has late Gothic net-ribbed vaulting, two side doors and a sturdy 32-metre tower. Inside, neogothic altars replaced earlier baroque fittings between 1890 and 1906 under Dechant Josef Ertl. Notable are the neogothic Baldachin altar with a statue of Saint Martin flanked by angels, a late gothic Pietà from about 1510, and the Jakobialtar with a statue of Saint Josef. Visitors find a spacious interior with a central aisle lined by pillars bearing statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Sacred Heart of Mary. The neogothic Baldachin altar dominates the chancel, while the left aisle holds the late gothic Pietà. The right aisle features the Jakobialtar with figures of Saint Florian and Saint Leonhard. A baroque Trinity group sits above the baroque organ loft, built around 1770. The 1976 Pirchner organ and the 1897 relief Stations of the Cross on the organ loft complete the scene. Outside, only a fragment of the old defensive wall remains near the parish house.
