Lake Toplitz

Lake Toplitz lies deep in the Austrian Alps, 98 kilometres from Salzburg. It sits high in the Salzkammergut lake district, surrounded by steep cliffs and dense mountain forest. The lake’s water turns salty below twenty metres, so fish live only in the top eighteen metres. Below that, no oxygen remains, yet bacteria and worms survive without it. Sunken logs float halfway down, making the depths hard to reach. A single private track, a mile long, leads to the western shore where the Fischerhütte restaurant stands. During the Second World War the lake shore became a Nazi naval testing site. Scientists exploded charges up to four thousand kilograms to study underwater blasts. After the war, rumours spread that forged British pound notes from Operation Bernhard had been dumped here. In 1959 divers recovered notes worth millions that Hitler had planned to use against Britain. Some believe more valuables may still lie beneath the logs and murky water. One diver recalled seeing a sunken aircraft below the floating barrier. Visitors walk the quiet forest path to reach the lake’s edge. The track ends at the Fischerhütte, a simple place to rest after the climb. From there the water stretches between dark cliffs, its surface calm and deep. The air carries the scent of pine and damp earth. Few people come, so the silence is broken only by birds and the occasional rustle of leaves. The lake keeps its secrets well beneath the floating logs and the salt line.
