Mauerbacher Pfarrkirche

The Catholic parish church of Mariae Himmelfahrt stands beside the gatehouse of the former Carthusian monastery in Mauerbach, a small town west of Vienna. Built as a gate-church, it served the monks and their servants who passed through the monastery gate. The present building replaced an earlier church first recorded in 1317 and was completed in 1645 under Prior Jodocus Schubert. The church’s architecture is notable for its compact cube shape and steep roof with a simple bell turret. The façade shows paired round-headed windows and rusticated stonework, while the south side has a gabled niche holding a 19th-century statue of the Virgin and Child. Inside, a short two-bay nave with ribbed vaults is divided by strong wall pillars, creating narrow side spaces used as chapels. The high altar, designed by Matthias Steinl around 1722, dominates the north wall with its painted scene of the Assumption and statues of Joachim and Anna. Visitors step through a small 20th-century porch into a walled front garden enclosed by an early-18th-century railing topped with pine-cone finials. Two stone pedestals from after 1600 stand in the garden, one carved with ornamental panels and a lion’s mask. Inside, the walls carry delicate stucco work and ceiling paintings depicting scenes from the life of Mary, while the organ loft, supported by marbled columns, features carved angels playing instruments. The sacristy below and oratory above are reached by a winding stair, completing a quiet ensemble of 17th- and 18th-century craftsmanship.
