Burg Waldstein stands on a rocky outcrop above the Waldstein valley near Fischerbach in the Ortenaukreis. The ruined hilltop castle was built by the lords of Waldstein and first recorded in 1353. By the 16th century it had fallen into disrepair and today only fragments of its walls remain. The surviving ruins occupy a narrow plateau about 40 metres long and 10 metres wide. The castle once commanded views over the surrounding Black Forest valleys.

The site is worth visiting for its atmospheric remains and the sense of medieval life it evokes. The lords of Waldstein were minor nobles who left little written trace beyond their fortress. The castle’s decline after 1500 reflects the broader shift from feudal strongholds to more comfortable manor houses. Its isolated position adds to the feeling of stepping back into the Middle Ages.

Visitors find a quiet spot among the crumbling walls and weathered stones. The ruins sit above the hamlet of Franzosenhof, reached by a short walk from the valley road. From the plateau there are long views across the forested hills. The site is small but evocative, best appreciated for its solitude and the stories it suggests of past power and eventual decay.
