Münchner Lach- und Schießgesellschaft

The Münchner Lach- und Schießgesellschaft is a political kabarett theatre in Munich’s Schwabing district. Founded in 1956 by Sammy Drechsel and Dieter Hildebrandt, it started as a parody of a security firm. The name plays on the contrast between laughter and shooting, reflecting its satirical style. The ensemble quickly gained fame for sharp sketches and songs. Walter Kabel composed music for the early shows until 1972. The theatre became a centre for German political satire. Its first programme in 1956 was broadcast on national television the following year. The group dissolved in 1972 but re-formed in 1976, continuing the tradition. Performers like Rainer Basedow and Jochen Busse became well known in later decades. The ensemble won the Schwabing Kunstpreis in 1963 and the Swiss Cornichon Prize in 1996.
