Epping Ongar Railway

The Epping Ongar Railway is a heritage railway in south-west Essex, running between North Weald and Ongar. It follows the route of the former Great Eastern Railway branch line, later part of the London Underground’s Central line. The line was closed by London Underground in 1994 and reopened in stages from 2004 as a volunteer-run preserved railway. It now operates steam trains between Ongar and North Weald, with restored stations and signalling. The railway preserves a unique stretch of railway history that once linked London to rural Essex. Volunteers maintain the line and its heritage fleet, offering a glimpse of steam-era travel. The line’s past includes unusual features such as mechanical semaphore signalling at North Weald, the last place on the Underground to use them. Ongar station remains the only operational Great Eastern Railway station still painted in its original colours. The railway’s revival began with a controversial land deal in 1998 and restarted services in 2004. Steam returned in 2012 after major engineering work, restoring platforms, loops and facilities. Special events like the Teddy Bears’ Picnic draw large crowds each year. Visitors find Ongar station with its restored goods yard and milk dock being rebuilt as a second platform. The main building sells refreshments and souvenirs in Great Eastern Railway colours. North Weald station has been repainted in London North Eastern Railway and British Railways style. The line runs through quiet countryside between the two stations, offering a peaceful journey. Trains pass the site of Blake Hall, once one of Britain’s least-used stations. The restored signal box at Ongar uses original equipment, adding to the railway’s authenticity.
