Burgstall Haßfelden
Burgstall Haßfelden stands on a long spur between two small streams, the Altenberger Grimmbach and the Haßfelder Grimmbach, at 420.4 metres above sea level. The site lies on the edge of Langholz forest near the village of Haßfelden in Wolpertshausen. It once belonged to the Lords of Altenberg, who gave their name to the nearby Altenberg. The remains form part of a former settlement that vanished long ago. Little is known about the castle’s origins or fate. No records survive of when it was built or why it disappeared. Archaeologists believe the earthworks and mound point to a 12th- or 13th-century motte-and-bailey design. The Lords of Altenberg are often linked to the site, though written proof is lacking. The area now shows only grassy banks and a low mound where the tower once stood. Visitors find a quiet woodland clearing with subtle earthworks marking the old defences. A low circular platform marks the tower’s position, surrounded by a shallow ditch. The streams below still wind through the valley, adding to the peaceful setting. The site offers no grand ruins or signs, just the shape of the past in the landscape.
