Saaltor
The Saaltor is a preserved town gate standing at the southern edge of Alsleben’s old town in Sachsen-Anhalt. It spans Burgstraße where Grabenstraße joins from the west, marking the historic entrance to the medieval centre. The gate forms part of the former town wall that once enclosed Alsleben. Built in the late 18th century, the gate is a simple stone structure topped with a mansard roof. Its upper floor is timber-framed, showing the craftsmanship of the period. As the only surviving gate of the town’s fortifications, it carries special importance for local history. The gate also shapes the townscape, guiding visitors from the south into the old quarter. Inside, the gate’s passageway is narrow and vaulted, giving a sense of the original defensive purpose. Above, the timber gallery overlooks Burgstraße, linking the past with the present. The building is listed in the regional monument register, recognising its architectural and historical value.
