Wetterwandeck

The Wetterwandeck is a summit in the Wetterstein mountains, standing on the Austro-German border south of the Zugspitze. It rises above the Southern Schneeferner glacier and forms part of the ridge that borders the Zugspitzplatt to the south. The mountain’s slopes drop to the Ehrwalder Almbahnen ski area at its southern foot. A drag lift in the nearby ski region on the Zugspitzplatt bears the mountain’s name. Hermann von Barth made the first recorded ascent in 1874. Climbers value the Wetterkante route, which climbs 800 metres with UIAA grade V difficulty. The ridge above the Southern Schneeferner offers challenging scrambling and views across the glacier. The mountain’s position on the border gives it a distinctive character, shared with the Zugspitze massif nearby. Visitors find a high alpine landscape of rock and ice, with routes that test both fitness and skill. The ridge walk rewards with wide views over the Zugspitzplatt and the valleys below. The Ehrwalder Almbahnes ski area provides a contrasting lowland view of the mountain’s southern flanks. The Wetterwandeck remains a quiet but striking point in the Wetterstein range.
