Glenfarclas distillery

Glenfarclas distillery stands beside the River Spey in Ballindalloch, Moray. It is a Speyside single malt whisky distillery owned by the Grant family since 1865. The site includes traditional dunnage warehouses and modern visitor facilities. The distillery occupies a green valley floor with hills rising behind. It is one of the few distilleries still run by the founding family after nearly two centuries. The Grant family has managed the business for six generations. The distillery is recognised for its long independence and consistent quality. It was named Distiller of the Year by Whisky Magazine in 2006, 2020 and 2023. Glenfarclas produces a traditional Highland malt with a strong sherry influence. The distillery holds around 68,000 casks maturing on site. It has produced spirit since before 1791 and has been licensed since 1836. The company also sponsors the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase at Cheltenham. Visitors find a visitor centre opened in 1973. Inside is the Ship’s Room, a tasting room panelled with timber from the RMS Empress of Australia. The distillery uses six large stills heated by gas burners. It releases whiskies ranging from an eight-year-old to a 60-year-old limited edition. The Family Casks collection offers single cask bottlings from most years between 1952 and 2007. The surrounding landscape of farmland and wooded hills completes the visit.
