Schillerdenkmal
In Altenburg’s Schlossgarten, near the Lindenau Museum, stands a bronze relief of Friedrich Schiller on stacked granite boulders. The work was created in 1906 to mark the 100th anniversary of the poet’s death in Weimar in 1805. Local architect Max Goldmann designed the monument while sculptor Annemarie Haase modelled the bronze portrait. A simple inscription records the years 1759 to 1805 beneath Schiller’s name. The relief’s bronze surface shows Schiller in profile, framed by the rough texture of the granite. The contrast between the smooth metal and the jagged stones draws attention to the poet’s features. Visitors can walk from the museum’s entrance to the granite base in a few minutes. The garden setting keeps the monument shaded by mature trees. The inscription is the only text on the boulders, so the focus remains on Schiller’s likeness. The small clearing around the stones is paved with gravel, making the site easy to reach. From here the Lindenau’s neoclassical façade is visible across the lawn. The modest scale invites quiet reflection on the poet’s life and legacy.
