The Frauenkogel is a 683-metre hill on the western edge of Graz in the Steiermark region. It stands where the city meets the market town of Gratwein-Straßengel, forming part of a ridge that runs roughly east to west. The hill rises about 300 metres above the Gratkorner Basin and 230 metres above the Kirchberg hill near Maria Straßengel. Neighbouring peaks include the Steinkogel and the Reinerspitze at 710 metres. The Frauenkogel belongs to the Westliches Berg- und Hügelland von Graz landscape protection area.

A medieval refuge ring once stood on the summit, giving women and children from Straßengel a place of safety. Nearby, the name ‘Ochsengrube’ on old maps suggests livestock were also sheltered here. In 1892 a stone base for the Goldhannwarte observation tower was built from local boulders, but the wooden tower burned down in 1908. Today the crumbling foundations of the tower remain, while the hill’s Kanzelkalk rock layers tell of an ancient seabed. A line of dolines called the ‘Wassergspiel’ separates the Frauenkogel from the Steinkogel.

Visitors reach the summit along marked paths through beech and pine woods. Steep, wooded slopes drop away to the north and west, giving wide views over the Gratkorner Basin. The remains of the Goldhannwarte base sit near the highest point, offering a quiet spot to rest. From here the ridge continues toward the Reinerspitze, while the dolines below show signs of past water flows. The contrast between the rocky outcrops and the surrounding farmland makes the Frauenkogel a distinctive local landmark.
