Burgstall Freudeneck

The Burgstall Freudeneck stands on the Greinberg, also called Kraiberg, near Rattelsdorf in Upper Franconia. It is the remains of a medieval spur castle, built on a narrow ridge that drops steeply on the north and east sides. The site measures about eighty metres by seventy metres and sits at 356 metres above sea level.
No written records or archaeological finds tell its story, though a local legend tells of a dwarf said to haunt the ruins. The only visible traces today are a low wall and a ditch that once defended the western and southern approaches. A sandstone wall with an outer ditch was added higher up the ridge to protect the entrance.
Visitors walk a quiet forest path to the ridge where the castle once stood. The steep slopes give views across the surrounding countryside. A small information board near the site explains what little is known. The peaceful Daschendorfer Forst surrounds the hill, making it a quiet place to imagine the castle’s vanished past.
