Schloss Neuweier

Schloss Neuweier stands at the entrance to Neuweier, a district of Baden-Baden, at the foot of the Mauerberg. Built in the 12th century as a water fortress, it was once a deep, defensible moated castle. The knights of Bach held it for 330 years before the Cronberg-Dalberg family took over in the 16th century. After damage in the German Peasants’ War, Philipp IV of Dalberg rebuilt it in the Renaissance style. Later owners included the Knebel von Katzenelnbogen family, who introduced Riesling vines from Franconia to the terraces of the Mauerberg. The castle has survived wars and changes of ownership through the centuries. Heavy damage occurred in the Palatinate War of Succession and again in the 17th and 18th centuries. After the last noble owner died in 1816, the property passed through several hands until the Rössler family bought it in 1869. After decades of neglect, Gisela and Helmut Joos restored the building in 1993. Today it belongs to the Schätzle family, who run a winery on the site. Visitors see one of the few remaining lowland castles in Baden. The winery of Robert Schätzle produces mainly Riesling and some Spätburgunder on fourteen hectares. The terraced vineyards of Schlossberg and Mauerberg rise behind the castle walls. Inside, modernised rooms house the winery’s operations and occasional events. The setting combines medieval stonework with vineyard slopes and distant views of the Black Forest.
