Schloßbühl Burg (Deggenhausertal)

The Schloßbühl is the remains of a spur castle on a wooded ridge above the hamlet of Burg in Deggenhausertal. It sits on a narrow promontory pointing west-south-west, surrounded on three sides by steep slopes that once formed natural defences. The site lies at 606 metres above sea level within the Bodenseekreis of Baden-Württemberg. The castle’s strongest point is a massive earthen rampart, now eight to nine metres wide at the top, which blocks the gentler north-eastern approach. Behind it a deep neck ditch and a second ditch further south separate the outer ward from the main castle. The outer ward covers roughly sixty by fifty metres and is still used for forestry, while the main triangular stronghold, about ninety metres long, lies at the end of the ridge. Visitors walk along the forest tracks that follow the old ditch lines and ramparts. The slopes are covered with beech and spruce, and the only clear break in the earthworks is a gap at the southern end, once the main entrance. No stone walls or towers remain above ground, but the earthworks themselves show how the builders shaped the land to create a strong position without heavy masonry.
