Burg Wunnenhagen
Burg Wunnenhagen stands on a flat plain in the Langwedel district of Lower Saxony, near an old loop of the Aller river. The site once belonged to the von Hagen family, a ministerial line recorded since the mid-12th century. In 1315 three brothers of this family sealed a charter at Wunnenhagen, linking the place to their power. The remains form a rectangular plateau twenty metres wide and thirty metres long. Two low mounds at its southern corners suggest buried walls beneath the soil. A double system of ditches and ramparts once defended the site, with the outer bank now smoothed by ploughing and cut through by a modern drain. Visitors walk across the grassy plateau and see the shallow ditches and low earthworks on three sides. A sunken track on the south-east edge may mark the original entrance. West of the plateau the old riverbed still holds traces of wooden posts that once carried a bridge or river barrier.
