Wenlock Priory

Wenlock Priory stands in Much Wenlock, Shropshire, on ground once occupied by a 7th-century monastery founded by Merewalh, king of the Magonsaete. The present ruins belong to a Cluniac priory refounded between 1079 and 1082 by Roger de Montgomery. In 1101 builders found bones beneath the old church floor, believed to be those of Saint Milburga, and moved them to the main church. The priory sent twelve monks in 1170 to found Paisley Abbey and owned dependent houses at Dudley, St Helen’s and Church Preen. King Henry III stayed several times in the 1230s, bringing wine and gifts while Prior Humbert acted as royal envoy in Wales. The monastery was dissolved in 1540 and most buildings were pulled down, yet the plan of church and cloister remains clear. The south transept still rises to full height, its east wall lined with three chapel arches and a triforium passage above. The chapter house, built about 1150–1180, shows three tiers of intersecting round arches and once held ribbed vaulting in three bays. Nearby the lavatorium base preserves carved panels from the late 12th century depicting scenes from the lives of the Apostles. The infirmary and prior’s lodging survive as an L-shaped private house praised by Pevsner as one of England’s finest examples of 15th-century domestic architecture. Visitors walk among the standing ruins of the nave, transepts and cloister garth. The south-west nave bays include an unusual upper room above the aisle vaults, its purpose still debated. The chapter house doorway leads into a vaulted chamber whose zigzag ornament frames the original Norman arch. In the cloister garth the remains of the lavatorium stand beside the foundations of its pavilion. To the south, the infirmary and prior’s house form a single L-shaped building with fine late medieval detail. The grounds also contain a collection of topiary and the town’s timber-framed streets lead back to the well of Saint Milburga, long associated with healing sight and securing marriages.
