St. Philipp und Jakob

St. Philipp und Jakob is a small church in Munich’s Daglfing district. It stands beside the Kohlbrennerstraße, surrounded by a partly walled cemetery that dates back to the 14th century. The building is dedicated to the Apostles Philip and James, though its earliest record from 845 names four crowned martyrs. A baroque rebuilding in 1724 by the Freising master mason Dominik Gläsl gave the church its present form. After decades of enlargement and repairs, the interior was refreshed in 2022 with a new stone ambo replacing the 1970s version. Inside, the single-nave church holds three baroque altars. The side altars display statues of Saint Martin of Tours and Pope Sylvester I, while the high altar carries a 19th-century painting of the two apostles. The 1978 organ, installed later, has six stops. Two bells were cast in 1884; the larger was lost in the First World War and replaced in 1976 with a new bell dedicated to Saint Catherine. The churchyard still holds old graves from the 14th century alongside newer plots added in the 20th century. A low wall separates the older, church-owned section from the municipal extension. Visitors walk past weathered headstones and mature trees before entering the quiet nave, where plain white walls and a simple vault focus attention on the altars and the single stained-glass window above the entrance.
