Beverley Minster

Beverley Minster stands in the heart of Beverley, a town in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It serves as the parish church of Saint John and Saint Martin and ranks among the largest parish churches in the United Kingdom. Though larger than one-third of all English cathedrals, it remains a parish church rather than a cathedral. The building is recognised as a Gothic masterpiece and holds Grade I listed status. Originally a collegiate church, it avoided becoming a bishop’s seat during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and survived largely intact. Only the chapter house and the attached church of St Martin were lost during that period. The minster owes much of its significance to Saint John of Beverley, a bishop of York who founded a monastery around the year 700. Archaeological work in the late 20th century confirmed the presence of an earlier church on the site from about 700 to 850. King Æthelstan is traditionally linked to the refoundation of the monastery as a collegiate church in the 10th century. By the early 11th century, the tomb of Saint John had become a major pilgrimage centre after his canonisation in 1037. The archbishops of York supported the minster’s growth and helped establish Beverley as a wool-exporting town by the 12th century. Inside, the minster reveals a blend of Gothic styles from different centuries. The lantern tower, retrochoir, choir, transepts, and crossing were rebuilt after a fire in 1188 and completed by the mid-13th century. The nave, finished around 1400, features two Perpendicular-style west towers that inspired those of Westminster Abbey. The great east window, funded in 1416, and the choir stalls from around 1520 add to the interior’s grandeur. The remains of Saint John of Beverley lie in a vault beneath the nave, continuing the site’s ancient tradition.
