The Bartlett

The Bartlett is the built environment faculty of University College London, set in the academic heart of Bloomsbury. Its buildings stand along Euston Road, Gordon Street and Torrington Place, close to the British Library and the Francis Crick Institute. The faculty brings together thirteen departments that teach architecture, planning, construction and environmental design. It also hosts research centres such as the Space Syntax Laboratory and the Survey of London. The Bartlett is ranked first in the world for architecture and the built environment. It began in 1841 as Britain’s first chair of architecture and became The Bartlett in 1919 after its benefactor Sir Herbert Bartlett. Today it is one of UCL’s eleven faculties and includes the Bartlett School of Architecture, which has held the top UK spot in the Architects’ Journal rankings for more than a decade. Visitors to the Bloomsbury campus will find the Bartlett School of Architecture in 22 Gordon Street, a building that preserves parts of the old Wates House. Central House on Upper Woburn Place houses the library and five departments, while 1-19 Torrington Place contains the School of Construction and Project Management. Five minutes’ walk away, 34 Tavistock Square holds the Development Planning Unit and 90 Tottenham Court Road is home to the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis.
