River Ardle

The River Ardle is a small tributary in Perthshire that runs for 16 kilometres through Strathardle. It begins where the Brerachan Water and Allt Fearnach meet at Straloch, then flows past Kindrogan House and the village of Enochdhu. After passing Kirkmichael and Ballintuim, it reaches Bridge of Cally where it joins the Black Water to form the River Ericht. The Ardle is known for its salmon and trout, making it a popular spot for anglers. The river’s name comes from a Pictish warrior killed in battle at Enochdhu in 903 AD. A mound in the garden of Dirnanean Lodge marks his supposed grave, measuring nearly six metres long and topped by a 1.5-metre standing stone. The stone’s origins remain unclear, though it is unlikely to be prehistoric. Several bridges cross the Ardle, including ones at Enochdhu, Kirkmichael and the A93 at Bridge of Cally. Walkers can follow paths along the riverbank, passing through quiet villages and wooded stretches. The surrounding Strathardle offers gentle hills and farmland, with views of the wider Perthshire countryside. The Ardle’s clear waters wind through the landscape, providing a peaceful setting for visitors. Its connection to local history and wildlife makes it a place worth exploring.
