Burgwall Biesenthal

The Burgwall of Biesenthal stands in the northern part of the town on Reihersberg, a natural sand island beside the Finowfließ stream. It is the earthen rampart of a Slavic fortification used between the 10th and 12th centuries. The oval mound is still up to four metres high and about fifty metres across, rising above the surrounding wetland. Excavations have shown that the stronghold served as an aristocratic centre for the Slavs of the Finow region and north-west Barnim. Surface finds also reveal a smaller settlement to the west, suggesting a fortified courtyard protected the main hall. Several Slavic villages once lay scattered between the upper Finow and Wandlitzsee, showing how this place organised the wider land. Visitors walk a low path around the grassy ramparts and can see the flat top where timber buildings once stood. The Finowfließ curves past the eastern edge, its banks lined with reeds and willows. From the top of the mound there are wide views across the meadows and pine woods of Barnim, a quiet reminder of a medieval Slavic world now half-buried in sand and grass.
